Special District Information Program
Introduction
The Special District Information Program is a state special district clearinghouse and a vital component of Florida's Local Government Financial Reporting System. The program serves many customers - special districts, municipalities, counties, state agencies, the public, and professional organizations - by:
- Administering the Uniform Special District Accountability Act of 1989 ( see Chapter 189, Florida Statutes - Special Districts: General Provisions)
- Providing technical assistance as it relates to the general requirements of Florida's special
districts. Resources include:
- The Florida Special District Handbook Online, written for special district staff and governing board members
- An annual special district conference cosponsored with the Florida Association of Special Districts
- Continually disseminating, classifying, updating, and sharing information about Florida's 1,620-plus special districts through the Official List of Special Districts Online - Directory - a "one-stop shop" source of information about special districts. More than 685 state and local agencies and municipalities and counties must have access to this information so they can coordinate activities, compile financial information, comply with various state and local reporting requirements, and monitor special districts.
- Promoting special district accountability by:
- Monitoring important financial report filings
- Assisting state agencies and local governments in collecting delinquent reports
- Helping special districts produce reports that have been delinquent
- Enforcing financial reporting through the circuit court when directed to do so by the Joint Legislative Auditing Committee
